I've been reading lots of reviews talking about how this is not a family film. Considering the traditional idea of a family film, I must agree. But, in our family, this is a family film. This is not one you put on for younger children and leave them alone to be scared, because they will likely be scared. But if you watch it with them and tell them what is coming, I imagine most children wouldn't be too creeped out. Our 5 & 6 year olds weren't. This one has the standard Dahl plot device of an orphaned child and lots of creepy women, as in some of his stories. Angelica Huston steals the show, but Jasen Fisher, the main character, holds his own very well. Bottom Line: If you haven't seen this one, watch it first before you watch it with the kids.

But the movie. br> It's better than the book. So what exactly is it about? Well, a boy called Luke, learns that there are witches on the planet. Witches who hate little children. Witches who want them destroyed. His grandmother tells him that the Witches have one meeting every year, to think up of plans how to rid children off the face of the Earth! One day, Luke and his grandmother go to a hotel. The plan was simple. They were supposed to have a good time and relax. Instead, Luke accidentally stumbles into a meeting room where the friendly ladies from the RSPCC (royal society to prevention of cruelty to children) are supposed to have their meeting. but, Luke soon finds out, they're not the RSPCC. they're the witches! And so Luke overhears their horrible plan (to rid children from the planet, of course.
When, the meeting is over and Luke is about to exit, one witch finds him, and turns him into a mouse! Luke knows what he has to do. He has to stop the witches' plan from happening. That however proves to be difficult as mouse have 2 deadly enemies. Cats and humans. Will Luke stop the witches? Sounds interesting, huh? Well, once you finish watching this movie, you'll want to watch it again and again! You'll love it! Rating; 6/10.

Not impressed. It has all the faults of modern Hollywood. Excessive CGI that at no point manages to look even close to real. Overreliance on humor to the point that it gets impossible to take the film seriously. Main actors trying ridiculous accents that they don't manage to sell. And obviously, this being a remake/re-adaptation rather than an original idea or, at the very least, an adaptation of something we haven't seen. God, I hope they don't screw up Matilda next.

 

This is hilariously bad, which is sad as the book deserves so much more than whatever this is. Does The Thing (1982) count as an alien invasion movie? If so, that's my favorite. The thing about the original is that even though it was based on a childrens book, it didnt feel like a kids movie. I was actually scared as a kid, in a good way. Its meant to make you feel uneasy at all ages. The graphics are overdone here and make it feel cartoony taking away its charm altogether. Its like Stuart Little part 2. Not everything geared towards a general audience has to be comedic and cartoony. Disappointed.
